How much packing volume should your hiking or trekking backpack have?
There are different types of hiking and trekking backpacks, which also differ in terms of their capacity.
Daypacks/daypacks are very compact and usually have a volume of 15 – 30 liters.
Hiking/touring backpacks are designed for tours lasting several days and have a volume of approx. 30-50 liters .
Trekking backpacks with a volume of between 60 and 70 liters, as well as hiking or touring backpacks, are suitable for trekking tours lasting several days in summer. In autumn and winter the luggage is a little more extensive, you need more than 70 to 90 liters of volume .
Another important criterion is the weight of the backpack. You will particularly appreciate the advantage of a light backpack on a challenging tour: If your backpack already weighs over three kilos, for example, you will feel every meter of altitude on a demanding tour.
In general, high-quality workmanship is essential for a hiking backpack; after all, it has to withstand a lot of load and should ideally serve you well for a few years.
Which backpack is right for you?
We have created a short guide for you on which aspects are important in a backpack:
Carrying system and air circulation : If you have to carry more weight, you also need more comfort. The carrying system is responsible for transferring the load to the shoulder and hip straps. It consists of a frame construction made of rails. These can be made of aluminum or plastic. Plastic is very light, but also breaks more easily than aluminum. The back must also be well padded and at the same time sufficiently ventilated so that you don't sweat on your back.
Belts : The hip belt distributes the load from the back and shoulders to the hips and is the most important among the belts. That's why this one should be well padded and breathable. Chest strap and load control straps keep the trekking backpack securely attached to the body in difficult terrain.
Adjustable back length : A backpack should fit your height. It therefore makes sense to have a function that allows you to adjust the back length.
External fastening loops/eyelets : Additional equipment such as sleeping bags, sleeping mats, hiking poles or jackets can be attached to these.
Side compartments/lid compartment/bottom compartment : You can use these to store things that need to be within easy reach, such as a water bottle, map or a snack on the go.
Volume expansion : This is helpful if you want to take additional equipment with you.
Rain cover : A trekking backpack is rarely waterproof, which is why a rain cover makes sense.
